Spawn

Spawn is the main character of a comic book of the same title from Todd McFarlane Productions. A cinema adaption was also released in 1997.

Al Simmons was tricked by one of his partners and murdered in a foreign country. After being sent to hell because of his life as a mercenary, the US government agent Al Simmons makes a deal with the devil and becomes a Hellspawn. He agrees to serve Malebolgia, if the devil will allow him to see his wife one last time. Malebolgia returns Al to the living realm, but with only a small portion of memory. Simmons is unaware that five years have passed, and that his wife, Wanda, has married his best friend, Terry Fitzgerald, and have a daughter named Cyan.

Noticing that his life is over, Al has two choices before him: follow Malebolgia, or renounce the demon. Simmons renounces the Malebolgia and eventually kills him, but refuses the throne of Hell. Upon returning to Earth, Simmons discovers he has new powers but soon must put them to use. However Spawn now has to battle the minions of heaven and hell in the effort to protect those he loves.

POWERS/ABILITIES

Things that normally work on living creatures have little or no effect on him. His necroplasmic armor grants him great resistance to injury and access to a reservoir of power that he can use to heal damage to his body, fly, teleport across distances, project bolts of glowing green hellfire and a vast amount of others. This reservoir is limited, and if he drains it, he will be pulled back into Hell permanently (it has been said that his power is unlimited in the newer versions). Chains and gigantic red cloak are alive and cater to his thoughts. Has super-human strength and can move almost anything in his path.

As a former government-sponsored assassin, Simmons is a master of many forms of armed and unarmed combat and is well-versed in conventional and unconventional warfare.

POPULARITY FACTOR

Spawn is popular mainly because Todd McFarlane was already a well known illustrator during his days at Marvel Comics. He was popular for his work on Spiderman. The popularity of Spawn was also boosted by the Spawn toys.
